Large populations of patients were analyzed to search for correlations between features of glaucoma (intraocular pressure corneal thickness) and features of diabetes (fasting blood sugar, fasting insulin, and hemoglobin A1c). In a collaborative study with investigators from Iowa and from the NEIGHBORHOOD consortium the Glaucoma Genetics Lab reports that MYOC mutations are one of the most common, known-causes of normal tension glaucoma, glaucoma that occurs with normal to low intraocular pressure. Exfoliation syndrome is a leading cause of glaucoma worldwide. However, progress in developing better therapies for exfoliation glaucoma has been hindered by the lack of an animal model. Dr. John Fingert and Dr. Michael Anderson have received a two-year, $418,000 research award from the National Eye Institute to create and study animal models of exfoliation glaucoma using a genome editing approach.
